A Stern-Gerlach type experiment is presented asan unsharp joint measurement of spin components. Usinga simple realistic magnetic field, the interactionHamiltonian reads H = μ(–σxx+ σzz). In the framework of operational quantum physicsthe apparatus is represented by a Gaussian-shaped wavefunction. The probability reproducibility conditionleads to the nearly best joint spin-x-z- observable formulated as a positive operator-valuedmeasure. Observable and measurement are discussed withinthe quantum theory of measurement.
