Bacterial and some forms of viral infections of the central nervous system are life threatening diseases. Their prognosis depends - among other factors - on an early diagnosis. This paper describes clinical features of the most frequent forms, their diagnosis and treatment as well as prognosis and prophylaxis. © Springer Medizin Verlag 2005.
