摘要
Earthquakes are natural phenomena which cannot be controlled, but their effects can be minimised. This study proposes a state-of-the-art review of the main effects of earthquakes on civil engineering structures and provides possible mitigation solutions to reduce seismic vulnerability. The main aspects reviewed include the liquefaction in dams and tunnels, the cracking and tilting of roads and buildings, and the live-load and scour-depth effects on bridges. The main causes of earthquakes and their problems on civil engineering structures through observations in recent great earthquakes are discussed. Results show that a large damage contrast has been observed between developed and undeveloped/underdeveloped countries credited to the incredible financial, social, and cultural contrasts between third-world and world-leading nations. A lesson learned is also introduced for the design of structures with the consideration of permanent ground deformation to mitigate the damage caused by earthquakes incorporating the effect of permanent deformation on structures. © 2021, Saudi Society for Geosciences.
