Improving Identification of Potentially Inappropriate Medications among Older Patients: a Preliminary Report of a Single-Blind, Controlled Trial Teaching Fourth Year Medical Students Value- and Preference-Based Prescribing/De-Prescribing

This pilot curriculum was developed following Kern’s six-step curriculum development approach to teach fourth year medical students value- and preference-based prescribing/deprescribing for older patients with multimorbidity. In this single-blind, controlled trial, 147 students participated, 59 who were assigned to the intervention, and 88 to the control group. Needs assessment data from students supported the necessity of this curriculum. Students in the intervention group identified significantly more potentially inappropriate medications than students in the control group. The students’ feedback on the experience was positive. This pilot curriculum has value in education and clinical practice for fourth year medical students. © 2016, International Association of Medical Science Educators.
