Janet Brown explores the perceived roots of some of the resistance of Jamaican parents to the concept of child rights, on the assumption that this understanding can guide strategies in either tackling or buttressing parents’ defenses. She draws on Caribbean research related to child-rearing and child-caring practices and on recent focus groups with parents and children in which the intersection of child-rearing culture and concepts of child rights has been explored. © 2001 The Society for International Development.
