Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a debilitating chronic pain disorder that is often resistant to traditional treatments and has long-term financial and emotional consequences. Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) has gained popularity over the last few decades for treating many types of chronic pain, and has been shown to significantly improve pain and quality of life in CRPS. Different variations of SCS, including burst and high-frequency stimulation, are equally as effective at reducing pain in patients with CRPS and can achieve this result at subsensory threshold levels. A promising new approach in neuromodulation is dorsal root ganglion stimulation, which is a technique that allows for more precise pain relief in areas that were previously difficult to reach. Advancements in both research and technology have helped make SCS a mainstay in the treatment of CRPS. © 2016, Springer Science + Business Media New York.
