In the present paper, the feasibility is demonstrated of application in hydrooptics of the method that has long been developed for atmospheric sensing and undecervedly forgotten. The range of lidar return signal variations is calculated versus the water turbidity. Upgrade of the equipment allows a hypothesis about vertical homogeneity of water depth to be abandoned. © 2007 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.
