摘要
This article outlines the process of religious change in Venezuela utilizing survey data from 1999 through 2017 and addresses the political implications of growing religious diversity. We demonstrate the growth of both evangelical Protestantism and the religiously unaffiliated, highlighting the relatively high levels of religious beliefs and participation among the unaffiliated. We also track the evolution of attitudes toward Presidents Chávez and Maduro across religious groups, confirming some of the conventional wisdom about religious affiliation and politics in the region while questioning other assumptions. Our findings suggest that in a fluid religious marketplace such a Venezuela, the paradigm of “enchanted modernity” (Morello et al. 2017) provides critical insights for understanding religious participation, identity, and politics across religious affiliations. We conclude by highlighting the potential for a political coalition across religious affiliations around issues of public morality such as same-sex marriage and abortion.
