Explored was the effect of blowing agent (NH 4Cl + NH 4F mixtures) on the SHS of α-Si 3N 4 from a mixture of fine Si powder and α-Si 3N 4 used as an inert diluent. A prerequisite for a maximal specific surface of resultant Si 3N 4 powder was found to be perfect homogenization of starting Si-Si 3N 4 mixtures. © 2011 Allerton Press, Inc.
