Numerical modeling of the effects of current and sea level variation on wave height and propagation

One-way coupling experiments using a third generation wave model, WAVEWATCH III (WW3), and a three-dimensional ocean circulation model, Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS), were applied to predict wind waves for Typhoons Shanshan (0613) and Nari (0711) around the Korean peninsula. The computed results clearly showed that current, including tidal current, has an effect on wave characteristics. We confirmed that when there is a strong current in the opposite direction as that of wave propagation or wind direction, especially where the currents including tidal effects are usually strong, wave height and period increase and decrease, respectively. However, sea level had little effect on wave height in the study area.
