摘要
Leprosy can develop as a result of a chronic infection with Mycobacterium leprae. The majority of cases of leprosy occur in rural regions of Southeast Asia, in tropical regions of Africa and in South America. Leprosy is uncommon in developed countries. Most of the cases are imported from endemic regions. The main reservoir for the transmission of the pathogen are humans. So far two transmission routes into the human body have been described: via skin lesions and the airways. Despite effective treatment and educational measures, leprosy continues to be a problem of stigmatization. Contrary to popular belief, leprosy is not highly contagious. There are two different types of leprosy known: paucibacillary and multibacillary. However, to date it has not been possible to culture the pathogen in vitro. There are various aspects of major occupational importance particularly for travellers visiting endemic regions. This article gives a brief review of the current state of knowledge about epidemiology, pathology, diagnostics, treatment and prevention. © 2017, Springer Medizin Verlag GmbH.
