摘要
An appraisal of a rural South-eastern Nigeria river was carried out between January and June 2021 for suitability for multiple uses. The river was appraised in three stations for drinking, support for aquatic life and irrigation purposes using relevant indices. The indices used were Water Quality Index for drinking water purpose, Comprehensive Pollution Index for aquatic life support and Sodium adsorption ratio, Magnesium hazard Ratio, Kelly’s Ratio and soluble sodium percentage for irrigation purpose. Fifteen physicochemical parameters were evaluated using standard methods and compared with national standards. All the physicochemical parameters evaluated were within acceptable limits except a few pH and some dissolved oxygen values. The physicochemical parameters were majorly influenced by season rather than anthropogenic activities. All the indices were also favourable and within their respective acceptable limits; reflecting the seasonal influence especially in station 1. The indices applied effectively appraised the water quality of the river for multiple purposes and showed that the water quality was suitable for the designated purposes. © Islamic Azad University (IAU) 2021.
