Morphometric Parameters of the Neurodegenerative Process in Parkinson’s Disease and Chronic Cerebral Ischemia

We present here results obtained from MRI-based volumetric morphometry of the cerebral hemispheres, substantia nigra, and red nucleus in patients with different stages of Parkinson’s disease (PD) and patients with the early and advanced stages of cerebrovascular diseases, as compared with values form healthy subjects. The extent of cerebral atrophy was greater in cerebrovascular disease than in PD, even at the early stages. At the same time, differently directed changes in the size of the substantia nigra were seen in these diseases, and this may have diagnostic value at different stages of the development of pathology. © 2015, Springer Science+Business Media New York.
