This review presents results from studies addressing the problem of the experience of time in waking and sleep. The adaptive value of the sensation of time and its role in cognitive processes of humans are discussed. Data on the currently known physiological mechanisms underlying the perception of temporal sequences and the evaluation and estimation of time intervals are presented. Similarities and differences in the perception of time in waking and different sleep phases are analyzed. © 2021, Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.
