Acylation of Methyl tert-Butyl Ether by Acetic Anhydride on Acid Amberlist 15 and ZrO2-SiO2 Catalysts

A study was carried out on the acetylation of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) by acetic anhydride on Amberlist 15 and acid ZrO2-SiO2 oxide in a flow system. The reaction products are tert-butyl acetate and methyl acetate, which are formed with 40 %-45 % selectivity at 40-50 °C. The most selective and stable ZiO2-SiO2 catalyst provides for 95 % conversion of MTBE and 45 % yield of tert-butyl acetate (LHSV = 3.9 h–1). Isobutylene and 2,4,4-trimethyl-1-pentene are the side-products.
