Sensitivity of the Transient Plane Source Method to Small Variations of Thermal Conductivity

The sensitivity of the transient plane source (TPS) method (also known as the Hot Disk method) to small variations of a material’s thermal conductivity and heat capacity was evaluated using a series of samples filled with polymeric microcapsules of different volume content. The results showed that, despite having a declared uncertainty of about 5% for its thermal conductivity measuring abilities, it is capable of detecting very low variations of thermal conductivity in similar samples.
