There is general concern about the significance of Helicobacter pylori infection for the development and progression of gastric MALT lymphoma. If any further evidence were needed for this association, it has been provided by experience with Helicobacter pylori eradication treatment. We know from many large prospective studies that successful eradication of the bacteria leads to a complete remission of localized (stage I) gastric MALT lymphoma in some 80% of cases. The long-term prognosis of most patients with complete regression of the lymphoma after eradication of Helicobacter pylori is excellent. We, therefore, think that this approach provides a genuine chance to be cured.
