Single-pulse experiment was conducted to study the mechanism of electrical discharge machining (EDM) ablation on titanium alloy. The discharge equivalent model of EDM ablation was established, and changes in the oxide layers between electrodes of EDM ablation was analyzed in this paper. Thermodynamic and kinetic analysis of titanium alloy EDM ablation showed that sufficient discharge energy was available to ignite titanium alloy and that titanium alloy possessed the conditions necessary for sustained combustion. The discharge gap of EDM ablation, the polarity effect, the erosion pit, and the morphology of the surface oxide layer were also studied. Results show that the ablation efficiency of titanium alloy was better than that of conventional EDM and that the morphology of the surface oxide layer was consistent with the interpretation of its ablation mechanism.
