Pulmonary embolism is a common, treatable, highly lethal pulmonary emergency, the diagnosis of which is formidable and enigmatic for the practicing emergency physician. Consequently, emergency physicians must be vigilant about considering pulmonary embolism in the differential diagnosis of a variety of presenting complaints and must use a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic options as they manage patients with suspected or confirmed pulmonary embolism.
