Separation of sodium phenolate from aqueous solutions was carried out at 25 degrees C using a supported liquid membrane with tricaprylylmethylammonium chloride or dibenzo-18-crown-6 (DBC) as carrier. Based on experimental data and using the assumption that the formation of the solute-carrier complex may be described by a pseudo first order reaction, overall and individual mass transfer coefficients were determined. The result show that as a carrier quaternary ammonium chloride was more effective than crown ether. The facilitation factor of the permeate was predicted from a model based on mass transfer accompanied by a reversible chemical reaction between the carrier and the permeate. Good agreement between predictions and experiments was observed. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
