A preliminary study for estimating leaf area index in a Pinus pinaster ait forest, in north-central Portugal, using Landsat thematic mapper data

摘要
In 1997, a 42-plot experiment was established in a Pinus pinaster stand in north-central Portugal, to analyze the relationship between radiometric data from Landsat thematic mapper (TM) images, and ground data from forestry stands. Each plot was referenced by global position system (GPS), and biophysical parameters, and leaf area index (LAI) was measured. Subsequently, spectral signa tures were collected from the images, after atmospheric, geometric and radiometric corrections. Using spectral signatures, vegetation indices were computed and used as estimator variables for mathematical models of LAI estimations. The results obtained enable us to state that precise LAI estimates can be obtained (R=0.454***), using mathematical models and remotely sensed data. The best results were achieved using vegetation indices that include soil line models obtained for the study area. However, new vegetation indices and mathematical models must be created and analyzed, in order to improve these results.
