A synthetic jet actuator has been proposed and built for the cooling of a one-dimensional VCSEL array. The design has been optimized in this work using a two-dimensional fluid dynamics simulation of the prototype coupled with an optimization routine. The optimum design calls for the jet orifice to be located near the upper comer of the array and angled about 29degrees with respect to the top surface. In this design, the jet moves back and forth along the top surface of the array and provides significant cooling on both the suction and blowing strokes of the actuator. The procedures used tor the optimization and the results are discussed in detail.
