Screw current in a single-walled carbon nanotube with chirality

A Dirac-type theory of the pi-electrons near the band edges has been presented for singe-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) with arbitrary chirality. The effects of the tubule size, chirality and. ne structure are included through effective metric and gauge potential. The violation of in-plane isotropy has been calculated explicitly for two most favorite models. In particular, the screw current in a chiral nanotube has been discussed in relax-time approximation. It is found that the ratio of the currents along the circumference and the axis is a very small constant, which only depends on the chiral angle and diameter. For a SWCNT with diameter 1nm, if the current is 1mA, the strength of magnetic field induced by the screw current in the tube is just several Gauss. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2010
