Deuteron disintegration by protons in the kinematics of quasielastic backward pd scattering

The exclusive deuteron-disintegration reaction p + d --> N(180 degrees) + (NN)(0 degrees) is analyzed under the assumption of the one-nucleon-exchange (ONE) mechanism. The analysis is performed for incident-proton kinetic energies of 0.2-2 GeV and the relative energy of the forward-emitted final NN pair in the range 0-20 MeV. These energy values correspond to the kinematical conditions of the relevant experiment planned at COSY Off-energy-shell effects, resulting, for example, in the node of the half-off-shell So partial-wave amplitude of NN scattering, and the role of higher partial waves in the subprocess pN --> pN are investigated and found to be very important, especially in the reaction p + d --> n(180 degrees) + (pp)(0 degrees). The accuracy of some approximate relations between the cross section for backward elastic pd scattering and the cross section for deuteron disintegration is verified under the assumption that the ONE mechanism is dominant.
