Kinetics of Surface Segregation in IF Steels

Auger electron spectroscopy is used to study kinetics of surface segregation of impurities in ferritic alloys with ultra-low content of interstitials in a temperature range of 550-570 degrees C and heating time up to 8 hours. The composition of segregation layer formed is dependent on temperature, and its thickness is close to a single layer. Carbon is the main segregate below 600 degrees C that displaces sulphur from the surface. Sulphur and titanium dominate above 700 degrees C. Segregation of sulphur and phosphorus takes place in a range of 600-700 degrees C, and segregation activity of sulphur increases with temperature. The results of experiments agree well with the results of calculation of segregation kinetics for model ternary alloys. As shown, the surface composition formed during experiments at temperatures above 700 degrees C is close to equilibrium one. The surface composition formed at lower temperatures is rather far from equilibrium one.
