EVALUATING THE CROSS-DISCIPLINARY AND EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING APPROACH USED IN TEACHING HISTORY IN ARCHITECTURE

摘要
This research is a continuity of a research on developing teaching history in architecture. The paper explains and evaluates the cross-disciplinary learning approach that is used in teaching a course in history in architecture, an analytical tool that is designed by the author to the help the students for a analyzing the buildings and a series of in-campus and out-campus activities. The course is taught by the author in the higher public education system in Egypt. The analytical tool provides questions that helped the students to recognize the type, the context, the visual attribute, and the social and political context of the building. The in-campus and out-campus activities includes research projects and fieldworks in the Christian, the neoclassical, and liberal age sites in Egypt. The course activities includes the exhibition of the final students work and the competitions that were launched to motivate the students. A designed questioner was used by the students to evaluate the course, the analytical tool, the different in-class and out class exercises, the cross-disciplinary approach, the role of the course in helping the students perceiving the Egyptian cultural heritage through late 19th century and early 20th century buildings, and to raise their cultural heritage awareness. And finally, the students were asked to define the obstacles of the course and give recommendation to develop the course for the next year.
