Modulation of lipid bilayer interfacial dipole potential by phloretin, RH421, and 6-ketocholestanol as probed by gramicidin channel conductance

Phloretin significantly enhances gramicidin A (gA) single channel current in diphytanoylphosphatidylcholine (DPhPC) bilayers but not in glycerylmonoolein (GMO) bilayers. Phloretin enhanced gramicidin M (gM) conductance much more than gA conductance in DPhPC bilayers, and a modest enhancement was observed in GMO bilayers as well. These findings show that the interfacial dipole potential (IDP) inhibits current flow in gA, was more prominent in DPhPC than in GMO, and was more exposed in gM than in gA channels.
