Seeking to reduce costs, one of the constructive alternatives that have been employed in Brazil is structural masonry. In this study, the influence of the mortar on the strength of the masonry was analyzed by two block prisms. The thickness of the joint was varied in five levels and the unit used was the ceramic structural block 14 x 19 x 29 cm. After the 28 days of age of the prisms, their resistance to simple compression and the modules of longitudinal deformation were determined. According to the results of the average resistance of the samples, the resistance of the prism is inversely proportional to the thickness of the mortar. However, after analysis of variance tests, it was concluded that the resistance of the prism to the thicknesses of 10, 15, and 20 mm are significantly equal; the same was concluded for the grouping of the thicknesses of 15, 20, and 25 mm.
