摘要
A study area, where non-treated wastewater from a non-levee-lined canal has been used for irrigation purposes for more than 40 years, was selected near Shijiazhuang City, the capital of Hebei Province in the North China Plain. Nitrate has been detected in all groundwater samples in the wastewater irrigated area. The average nitrate concentration was about 40 g m(3) and half of the wells had a concentration higher than the WHO drinking water standard (45 g NO3- m(3)). Concentrations of major ions and stable isotopes, O-18, H-2 and N-15 were used for identification of the source of nitrate pollution and the related physical and chemical processes. It has been concluded that wastewater is the common source of this pollution.
