How to Prevent the Next Generation of Nurses From "Eating Their Young"

Background: Workplace bullying is prevalent throughout health care. A review of the literature found the use of role-play simulation raises awareness and understanding of strategies to address bullying-this study used simulation by holding an event in a realistic setting, prebriefing, simulation, and a robust debriefing. Purpose: This institutional review board-approved exploratory qualitative investigation was to understand the student's awareness of bullying and to increase their knowledge of bullying behavior and strategies to use when it occurs. Methods: A convenience sample of senior BSN nursing students participated in a 2-hour bullying simulation and completed a reflection survey. The grounded theory method was used to analyze individual responses. Results: Six major themes with several associated minor themes were revealed. These major themes include the chaotic environment, great learning experience, emotional response, behaviors, barriers to learning, and impact on the nurse. Conclusions: The simulation had an impact on the students personally and professionally, and they learned from the experience.
