Relationship between the presence of alloy elements and growth mechanisms of oxide layers formed on AISI-430 stainless steels - Influence of Mn, Al and Ti

摘要
The isothermal oxidation behavior of two commercial stainless steels (AISI 430 and AISI 430 Al-Ti) has been investigated in the temperature range from 800 degrees C to 1000 degrees C in air using grazing incidence XRD, XPS, SEM-EDS and FTIR reflectance spectroscopy. The oxidation mechanism of the AISI 430 alloy is mainly controlled by the outward manganese diffusion in agreement with Grabke's study (Oxidation of Metals, 37 (1992) 81) and induces the formation of a duplex scale : Mn1+xCr2-x-yFeyO4/Cr2O3/alloy. The oxidation of the AISI 430 AI-Ti alloy leads to the formation of a mixture of three main constituents : (CrFe)(2)O-3, TiO2 and Al2O3 (at 1000 degrees C, different mixed titanium oxides are observed : Fe2Ti3O9 and Cr2TiO5). Titanium can diffuse more rapidly than manganese across the initial scale.
