The effect of preemergence treatment with herbicides on yield of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.)

In 1994 to 1996 the field experiments were conducted to evaluate the influence of preemergence treatment (chlorbromuron alone or in combination with supplementary mechanical treatment, as well as a mixture of terbutryne + terbutylazine + clomazone) on the yield and 1000-seed weight in chickpea. Chlorbromuron applied alone gave the best weed control of the present broadleaf weeds (98%) with no phytotoxicity symptoms during the whole growing season. Moderate phytotoxicity occurred with the mixture of terbutryne + terbutylazine + clomazone (mark 2 according to the EWRC scale) with slight leaf damage that has disappeared in a few days. From the point of yield height we have found out significant differences in 1994 with preemergent application of chlorbromuron alone or in supplement with mechanical treatment (yield increase by 0.91 t.ha(-1) and 0.87 t.ha(-1) -statistically highly significant differences) or in 1995 at the variant with application of chlorbromuron alone (yield increase by 1.08 t.ha(-1) -statistically significant difference), as well as at the variant with supplemental mechanical treatment or by application of terbutryne + terbutylazine + clomazone mixture (difference in yields 0.99 t.ha(-1) -statistically significant difference). Weather had negative impact on the yield of chickpea, especially in 1996 (yield reduction by the half as compared to 1994). The effect of variant on the yield was not statistically significant. The highest yield without significance was found out at the variant with mechanical treatment. Difference in the yields among the years was statistically highly significant. The effect of variants on 1000-seed weight was without statistical significance.
