摘要
When discharged without adequate treatment into water resources, hazardous metal ions found in industrial wastewater influence the risk to human and environmental health. Low-cost adsorbents with a high metal-binding potential are widely used for heavy metal removal. Intrinsic physico-chemical structural features of adsorbents significantly affect their potential for adsorption. The influence of physico-chemical properties on the adsorption capacity is comparable for all three metal cations namely Cu2+, Co2+, and Zn2+. Acidic surface functionalities were bound with Cu2+ and Co2+. Carboxylic groups were involved in adsorption of Cu2+ and Zn2+ whereas lactonic groups were interact with Zn2+ and convert into complexation. The pH effect demonstrated a dramatic increase in adsorption efficiency by rising the solution pH from 3 to 6. It was proven that adsorbent could be used as an effective adsorbent for removal of Ni(II) ions from water solutions as an alternative to commercial activated carbons. (c) 2021 Elsevier Ltd.
