Selenium toxicity - Effect of an early supplementation

The aim of this work was to study the influence of an early supplementation of selenium upon the metabolism of glutathione in the rat. The selenium supplementation (2ppm as Na2SeO3) was started with the mothers one week before pregnancy, until 3 months of age of the animals. Selenium levels were determined in liver, testis and blood cells. The activities of enzymes related to glutathione redox cycle and nonprotein thiol concentration were determined in liver. In liver and in blood cells of supplemented animals, Se increased eight fold. Enzyme activities did not change. However, after stopping supplementation, liver Se decreased and cGPx increased. These facts suggest an inhibitory effect of high Se concentration.
