Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) has been evaluated as a corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in biodiesel blend B20 by weight loss method and complemented by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigations. The results showed that the pure biodiesel is more corrosive than pure diesel. BHT has fairly good inhibiting properties for carbon steel corrosion in B20, with efficiency of around 95% at a concentration of 150 mg/Kg. Inhibition efficiency increases with increase in the concentration of BHT but decreases with rise in temperature. The thermodynamic parameters of corrosion and adsorption processes were calculated and discussed. (C) 2015 Taiwan Institute of Chemical Engineers. Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
