The effect of communication between therapeutic nurses and patients on pre-surgical anxiety levels

The objective of the study is to determine the relationship of therapeutic nurse communications with regard to patients' preoperative anxiety levels about their surgical treatment in one hospital in Indonesia. The method used is descriptive correlative with a cross sectional approach and non-probability sampling method with a quota sampling technique. The total sample of 84 people were preoperative patients for surgical treatment at the Tangerang General Hospital. Data were analyzed univariate and bivariate using the chi-square test. Results show that from 84 patients preoperatively, 50 (59.5%) had mild anxiety, and 43 (51.2%) stated that the therapeutic communication nurse in both categories. There is a relationship between therapeutic communication nurses and patient anxiety with p-value .000 < (.05). Therapeutic communication relationship nurses would help reduce patients' preoperative anxiety levels about their surgical treatment at Tangerang General Hospital. (C) 2021 Elsevier Espana, S.L.U.
