Poetry Within the Framework of Perceptions of Power in the Ottoman Empire

The sultan was the owner of all domains in the Ottoman Empire. The way power was perceived by the Ottomans greatly influenced art and the status of the artist. The tradition of Classical Turkish poetry is especially important within the context of power relations. This poetry attracted attention and was esteemed by all ranks within the Ottoman Court. Poets were awarded and appointed to important positions in each period. 'Qasida', which is a 'poem of praise,' was especially important because it preserved the liveliness and continuity of the life of poetry within the Ottoman court and the world of art. This situation also provided artistic support to the political power and prestige of the Ottoman Empire.
