Trends in cartonboard packaging

After a general overview of packaging materials used in the global packaging market, this paper presents the major trends affecting the fascinating world of packaging manufactured of board grades. If brand name products want to be successful and stand out amongst the competition, the packaging has to offer real added value. Based on practical examples, the trend of combining design and functionality is illustrated. The main consumer trend towards luxury goods goes hand in hand with the trend towards premium products. With premium products, the packaging has to be very special, reflecting the high quality at the point of sale (P.O.S.). The trend towards exclusive packaging requires high-quality finishing techniques, and some of these techniques are on the way to become almost standard for the near future. The role of packaging in the fight against product pirates is discussed, and some typical solutions are presented. The mega-trend towards a convenience-oriented society asks for packages that serve an additional purpose. Finally, composite materials will be discussed, which allow to further boost protecting functions of the packaging. After discussing trends affecting the packaging industry, conclusions for future process concepts for cartonboard are presented.
