Synergistic Contribution of Chloride and Bicarbonate Ions to Pitting Corrosion Behavior of Carbon Steel

摘要
Pitting corrosion behavior of AISI 1020 carbon steel exposed to natural aeration and solutions containing Cl- or/and HCO3- was investigated using electrochemical and surface characterizations. The results reveal a synergistic effect of HCO3- and Cl- on pitting corrosion behavior of carbon steel. HCO3- serves as the main source of hydrogen and acts as a reactant to promote the formation of FeCO3/Fe2O3/Fe3O4 films as corrosion product, which are a prerequisite for pitting initiation and propagation. Cl- contributes to the catalytic dissolution of the Fe matrix, film breakdown, and diffusion within the occluded cavity, thereby significantly enhancing the pitting corrosion of carbon steel.
