The place of thiol/disulfide homeostasis parameters in acute gallstone cholecystitis diagnosis

BACKGROUND: Thiol/disulfide homeostasis protects the organism from oxidative damage and plays a role in many physiological events. We aimed to investigate whether thiol/disulfide homeostasis parameters have changed in acute cholecystitis patients and the spot of this parameter in the diagnosis of the disease. METHODS: There were 48 healthy and 48 acute cholecystitis patients in the prospective study. It was similar in age and gender between the two groups. Biochemical tests and thiol/distdfide homeostasis parameters were compared between the groups. RESULTS: Disulfide and oxidized thiol levels were higher, and reduced thiol levels were lower in the patient group compared to the control group besides, the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in native thiol and total thiol. CONCLUSIONS: In acute cholecystitis, thiol/disulfide homeostasis parameters are focused on the disulfide side, and we assume it may be a test that can be practiced in the diagnosis of the disease
