摘要
Objective: Patients with sickle cell anemia are susceptible to bacterial infections, including Salmonella spp. These patients due to frequent blockage of blood vessels and infarction and intestinal necrosis which leads to increased permeability, have a higher susceptibility to the bacterium. The aim of review study is the causes of more SCD patients with Salmonella infection than in healthy and non-SCD individuals. The present study is based on PubMed database information (1958-2020) using the words "Salmonella", "Sickle cell anemia" and "Osteomyelitis". Result: Persistent Sickling events in patients with anemia lead to intestinal and bone damage, facilitating the entry of bacteria into the bloodstream and then placement in the bone. Weakness of the liver, spleen, and reticuloendothelial system, along with decreased activity of the alternative pathway of complement, can sometimes increase the susceptibility to this bacterium. Salmonella infections can cause dangerous conditions, especially in children with sickle cell anemia. Therefore, timely diagnosis and treatment with appropriate antibiotics is emphasized.
