摘要
We have used scanning tunneling microscopy to study grain boundary motion in oxygen films adsorbed on Ru(0001). Starting from an analysis of atomically resolved images of the thermal motion of oxygen atoms within the grain boundaries, we are able to successfully predict the future of complicated configurations of grains involving several hundred thousand atoms over several hours. The detail to which theory can reproduce experimental histories shows the precision to which previously hypothetical models of surface kinetics can now be verified.
