A Flat Luneberg Lens Antenna for Wide-Angle Beam Scanning

摘要
A compact multi-beam flat Luneberg lens antenna operating at Ka-band is proposed and designed. The lens antenna consists of six dielectric layers and two parallel plates. A linear antenna array with 11 E-shaped patch antenna elements is employed to feed the lens antenna. The aperture size of the lens is 80x5 mm(2), while the lens antenna has narrow beams in the azimuth plane and wide beams in the elevation plane, respectively. Thanks to the usage of the transformation optics, the focus-to-diameter (F/D) of the proposed flat lens antenna is small as only 0.375. Simulated results show that the antenna has wide-scanning ability (up to +/- 60 degrees in the azimuth plane) and high aperture efficiency (over 60% at the axis direction).
