The investigations on the corrosion behavior of the amorphous Mg65Y10Cu25 alloy in comparison to that of the heterogeneous multiphase crystalline alloy and of the polycrystalline magnesium in strongly alkaline solution are presented. The amorphous and the multiphase heterogeneous crystalline Mg65Y10Cu25 alloy show a significantly lower oxidation tendency than pure magnesium which is mainly due to the noble constituent element copper. The higher corrosion rate and the worse passivation behavior of the multiphase crystalline material was due to its structural and chemical heterogeneity, causing galvanic currents between phases of different composition and a laterally inhomogeneous surface layer growth.
