Liquid crystalline properties of Schiff-base ligands: Role of flexible methylene spacer within the Schiff-base ligand

摘要
A series of Schiff base ligands derived from salicylaldehyde and alkylamines were synthesized and characterised. The length of the spacer segment 'n' in these Schiff base ligands was systematically varied and its effect on the phase transition temperatures and the mesophase structure was determined using DSC and polarizing microscopy. The thermal stability of the mesophase increases with increasing length of the alkyl chains. Only the Schiff base with the azomethine group with n = 6 exhibits a smectic mesophase while others show only a crystalline melting.
