INVESTIGATING FACTORS FOR HEALTH INFORMATION SYSTEMS USE BY PHYSICIANS IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

Health Information Systems (HIS) are designed for the collection of information about health service delivery, processing, analyzing, and disseminating the information about the health services. The study investigates factors that hinder health care professionals in the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in health care delivery. The observed context of this study is the Nigerian Primary Health Care (PHC) system. The problems in the use of HIS have not been well addressed in the developing countries' context; most of the studies done so far have been in a developed countries' context. That is, there is inadequate literature on HIS use from the perspectives of developing countries. This study proposes a model for assessing the behavior of physicians toward the use of HIS in developing countries. The proposed model has its theoretical foundation from the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). The model is extended with the SCT model. Results showed that the data collection instrument is valid and reliable. The model and the hypotheses were tested and it was discovered that all the variables in the proposed model are relevant except for effort expectancy.
