Helminthic infestation of the mouflon (Ovis ammon musimon) in Hungary

In the period between October 1989 and December 1999 a total of 154 mouflons from individual hunting trips in Zemplen Mountains (73), Bukk Mountains (3), Matra Mountains (23), Pilis Mountains (15) and Gerecse Mountains (21) were examined. From the hunting ground established in the Bakony Mountains 19 mouflons were also subjected to parasitological examination. From the 154 mouflons examined, 144 (93.5%) were found to harbour parasites. The following species were recorded: 1 trematode: Dicrocoelium dendriticum; 2 cestodes: Moniezia expansa, cysticercus tenuicollis (the larval stage of the tapeworm Taenia hydatigena); 24 nematodes: Muellerius capillaris, Cystocaulus ocreatus, Protostrongylus rufescens, Dictyocaulus filaria, Strongyloides papillosus, Haemonchus contortus, Teladorsagia (syn: Ostertagia) circumcincta, Ostertagia ostertagi, O. leptospicularis, O. trifurcata, Spiculopteragia bohmi, Trichostrongylux axei, T. capricola, T. colubriformis, T. vitrinus, Cooperia pectinata, Capillaria bovis, Nematodirus filicollis, N. abnormalis, N. spathiger, Chabertia ovina, Oesophagostomum venulosum, Trichuris ovis, T. globulosa. Data on extensity and intensity of infection with individual worm species are presented. The present examination is the first systematic survey on the parasite fauna of the mouflon in Hungary.
