摘要：

The central question addressed in this paper is whether biomaterials are needed or not in cartilage tissue engineering. Several examples are used to illustrate the possibilities, advantages and disadvantages of procedures that use biomaterials only (cell-free), cells only (scaffold-free) or novel combinations.
