The 39(th) Annual Meeting of the Society for Neuroscience (October 17-21, 2009) was hosted in the city of Chicago. Over 30,000 attendees from around the world gathered in the windy city to share and discuss the latest developments in neuroscience research. In this report, we focus on presentations relating to the development of neurological and psychopharmacological drugs, as well as those describing recent advances in the field of optogenetics, a promising research tool that holds the potential for identifying specific neuronal circuits that could be exploited for therapeutic purposes.
