Two new multidentate ligands 2,6-dimethyl-3,5-dicyano-4-(3-quinolinyl)-1,4-dihydropyridine, L1, and 2,6-diamino-3,5-dicyano-4-(3-quinolinyl)-2,5-heptadiene, L2, incorporating multii-functional groups have been synthesized and reacted with silver(I) salts to give complexes of the types [Ag(L1)(CF3SO3)](n), 1, {[Ag(L1)(2)](ClO4)}(n), 2, and {[Ag-2(L2)(2)](ClO4)(2)center dot 2CH(3)CN center dot H2O}, 3. All compounds have been characterized by spectroscopic methods and their structures determined by X-ray crystallography. Ligand L1 forms 2-D layer structures in the solid state, while those complexes 1-3 show 0-D molecular complex, 1-D ladder-like chain and 2-D polymeric net forming 3-D supramolecular structures by series N-H center dot center dot center dot O and C-H-X (X = O or F) hydrogen bonds and/or C-H center dot center dot center dot pi and pi-pi interactions. All complexes exhibit emissions which may be tentatively assigned as intra-ligand (IL) pi --> pi* transition. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
